Tree Service Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers about estimates, insurance, scheduling, emergencies, cleanup, and common tree-service decisions.

How much does tree removal cost?

Every job is different — cost depends on the tree's size, location, condition, and accessibility. We provide completely FREE, no-obligation estimates so you know exactly what to expect before any work begins. Call us at (708) 979-4660 for a fast, fair quote.

Are you insured?

Yes. JDS Tree Service LLC is fully insured, and current documentation is available on request. Licensing and registration requirements vary by municipality, so any job-specific local requirement should be confirmed before work begins.

Do you offer free estimates?

Yes. We offer free, no-obligation estimates. Scheduling depends on location, weather, and crew availability.

How quickly can you respond to emergencies?

We answer emergency calls 24 hours a day. Response time depends on weather, road access, location, crew safety, and call volume. If a tree is touching a utility line or creates immediate danger, stay away and call the utility or 911 first.

What areas do you serve?

We are based in Lynwood and primarily serve southeast Cook County and Chicago's south suburbs, with selected work in Northwest Indiana. Call (708) 979-4660 to confirm availability for your address.

Do you clean up after the job?

Cleanup and hauling are explained in the written estimate. Confirm what will be removed, left as firewood, chipped, or hauled before work begins.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept cash and check. Please note that we do not currently accept credit cards. Payment is due upon completion of the work.

Is stump removal included in the price, or is that extra?

Stump grinding is a separate service and is not included in a standard tree removal quote. We'll always give you a clear, itemized estimate upfront so there are no surprises — stump grinding, debris hauling, and any add-ons are spelled out before we start. Just ask and we'll include it in your free estimate.

If one of your workers gets hurt on my property, am I liable?

JDS carries insurance and can provide current documentation on request. Property owners should review the certificate and ask their own insurer or attorney about their specific responsibilities.

What happens if your crew accidentally damages my property?

Tell the crew immediately and document the damage. JDS carries insurance, but any claim is reviewed under the applicable policy and circumstances; coverage should not be assumed or guaranteed in advance.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree, and will you handle it?

Permit requirements vary by municipality and by whether the tree is private, protected, or in a public right of way. The property owner should confirm requirements with the relevant local authority; JDS can discuss known job-specific requirements during the estimate.

My neighbor's tree is hanging over my yard — what can I do?

Property-line rules can be fact-specific. Do not enter a neighbor's property or perform work that could destabilize the tree. Discuss the issue with the neighbor and seek local legal advice when ownership or responsibility is disputed.

Does homeowners insurance cover tree removal after a storm?

Coverage varies by policy and circumstances. Contact your insurer to confirm coverage and documentation requirements. JDS can provide estimates, invoices, and job photos when available, but cannot determine or guarantee coverage.

How do I know if my tree is dead, hazardous, or just dormant?

Key warning signs include: no leaves during the growing season, large dead branches, fungal growth or mushrooms at the base, significant lean, cracks in the trunk, or hollow/decayed wood. If you're unsure, call us — we'll assess it for free and give you an honest answer. We'll never recommend removal unless it's truly necessary.

What is the best time of year to trim or remove a tree?

Late fall through early spring — the dormant season — is ideal for most trees. The tree is under less stress, cuts heal better before spring growth, and pest and disease transmission is lower. It can also be more affordable since demand is lower. That said, hazardous trees should be addressed immediately regardless of season.

Does this tree actually need to come down, or can it be saved?

Not every damaged tree needs removal. Pruning or monitoring may be appropriate in some cases. For a formal tree-risk assessment, disease diagnosis, cabling, or treatment plan, consult an ISA Certified Arborist with the relevant qualification.

How do I protect myself from storm-chasing tree service scams?

Ask for a written scope, current proof of insurance, contact details, and payment terms. Be cautious about pressure to decide immediately or pay the entire amount before work begins. Verify any licensing or registration required by your municipality.
